Reha and Bilge Ögünlü

About a decade ago, Reha and Bilge Ögünlü returned to Turkey after 15 years of living in the US to take over the family’s vineyards and start their own. The self-taught couple began planting in 2002, got involved in the slow food movement to eventually built a beautiful winery.

Urlice is part of the Urla Wine Route between Izmir and Çesme peninsula, certainly the best organized wine route in Turkey!

Among all the grapes grown on their vineyard you will find Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet sauvignon and merlot. I like the Chardonnay and the original rosé. Among the reds the cabernet Sauvignon Syrah blend reserve is my favorite but the Artisan Cabernet Sauvignon and the cabernet sauvignon Reserve are quite good too!

It’s a small winery but they do wonders. Although they don’t officially produce organic wine, their wines have less chemical additives as they have a non interventionist policy. They don’t rush the wine! Their wines are original in taste, well balanced, a bit rough for the reds but in a good way. They have a tasting room set into the vineyards and an underground cave where the wine is aged. It’s really worth the trip to Urla (Izmir)!
