I had the chance to visit Urlice vineyards last summer and to meet the owners, a wonderful couple called Reha and Bilge Ögünlü at their property in Urla, a beautiful region that some call the Tuscany of Turkey.
Urlice is a small winery but they do wonders. Although they don’t officially produce organic wine, their wines have less chemical additives as they have a non interventionist policy. They don’t rush the wine! Their wines are original in taste, well balanced, a bit rough for the reds but in a good way. They have a tasting room set into the vineyards and an underground cave where the wine is aged. It’s really worth the trip to Urla (Izmir)!
Let’s now taste this 2013 vintage 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
On the nose, loganberry, berry jam, cassis, oregano, baking spices and some interesting notes of moss from the trees.
Full bodied, strong chewy tannins, high acidity. Good balance and a lot of character. In a rustic way.
On the palate, black berries, sour cherry, thyme, tobacco, oregano and red pepper.
Beautiful peppery long finish.
This Cabernet Sauvignon is like no other.
