The Tuğra was a special signature of the Ottoman administration and it’s also the name of the upper series of Doluca wines.
We’ll taste the öküzgözü today.
As some of you already know, this Turkish red grape is a large and rather dark berry looking like a Bull’s eye, hence the name.
It originally comes from eastern Anatolia but this one comes from the winery’s vineyards in the Denizli region.
This Tuğra Öküzgözü is quite classic in style with a lot of fruits and a juicy structure.
On the nose you should smell aromas of plum, dark cherry, raspberry, pomegranate, cloves, cardamom and some black pepper.
The low yield of the vines ensured a high acidity and a good concentration.
After a cool fermentation the wine was matured 8 months in French oak.
The result on the palate gives a fruity and juicy wine with a nice balance between the fruitiness and the acidity. Tannins are soft and it’s quite deep.
Flavours don’t disappoint with notes of strawberry, plum juice, tobacco and vanilla.
The finish is delicately peppery.
Nicely done! 8,25/10
It paired well with a rabbit!
