Öküzgözü winery is based near Izmir in Bornova and is one of the few winemakers to grow Foça Karası, a local grape almost disappeared since the departure of the Greeks who lived in the region and used to cultivate it to make wine.
It used to be grown around Aydın, Denizli and Foça, hence the Greek name Phokaia on the bottle.
Now let’s taste this wine :
On the nose there are some herbal notes and red fruit aromas like strawberry and raspberry.
On the palate it has a pleasant texture with medium acidity and medium body. Spices are more noticeable in the mouth with green pepper flavours. I’ve also detected plum and black cherry.
I can’t say I’m a big fan but it’s always interesting to try some new grapes.
